Metering & Reporting Requirements for Inactive Wells
Definition:
Well Must Meet ALL Criteria below to be Inactive.
1. The well has NOT produced groundwater for a period of 1 year or more.
2. The well is maintained in a condition that demonstrates Intention of Future Use:
a. The well does not have any defects that would impair water quality.
b. The well has been fitted with a water-tight cover (if the pump has been removed) to prevent the entrance of debris or contamination.
c. The well is clearly marked.
d. The area surrounding the well is clear of brush or debris.
Documentation, Compliance Forms & Deadlines for Inactive Wells:

Submit Form by April 1, 2026
Submit Form by November 1, 2026
Submit Form annually by November 1 to demonstrate compliance.
While Inactive: Provided a well registration form is on file with SABGSA indicating the well is inactive, no meter installation or SABGSA Meter Installation & Calibration Compliance Form are required. However, the well operator must maintain compliance with the above criteria and submit the Inactive Well: Intention of Future Use Form to SABGSA.
If Well Becomes Active: Prior to re-commencing extraction, a flow meter must be installed and SABGSA Meter Installation & Calibration Compliance Form must be submitted. Requirements outlined on the Active Wells page.
